CHANCES: The CHilean Cluster Galaxy Evolution Survey — Chris Haines (Universidad de Atacama)

I will present the CHileAN Cluster galaxy Evolution Survey (CHANCES), one of the 18 public spectroscopic surveys that will be carried out with 4MOST, ESO’s new flagship spectroscopic survey facility, over five years (2026-2031). 4MOST is currently in the final stages of being installed on the 4m VISTA telescope at Paranal, and is a fibre-fed spectrograph able to simultaneously obtain high-resolution spectra for 2400 objects over a field-of-view of 4.2 square degrees. CHANCES will target 500,000 galaxies in and around 150 of the most massive galaxy clusters in the local Universe and out to z=0.45. CHANCES will provide comprehensive spectroscopic coverage of galaxies out to 5r200 for each cluster, and in synergy with XMM and eROSITA, permit in-depth studies of the mass assembly of clusters at late epochs and the impact of pre-processing on galaxies within infalling X-ray groups and connecting filamentary structures.
