The Birth of Planets: A Glimpse into Protoplanetary Disks in the Upper Scorpius Region — Carolina Agurto (Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María)

Protoplanetary disks are the sites of planet formation, and their physical and chemical evolution is fundamentally linked to the formation of planetesimals and planetary cores. This colloquium presents the characterization of the dust and gas properties of protoplanetary disks within the Upper Scorpius star-forming region, as part of the AGE-PRO large program. Utilizing high-resolution ALMA observations of 1.3 mm dust continuum and 12CO (J=2-1) emission, we have derived crucial observational constraints on disk properties, including their dust and gas disk radii and masses. Our analysis reveals key insights into the spatial extent and distribution of these two components. We will discuss the implications of our findings for understanding the evolutionary pathways of disks and the processes that govern the growth and evolution of dust grains, a critical step toward planet formation.
