The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC/SMC) are the pair of interacting galaxies closest to us and as such present a unique opportunity to study the evolution of galactic systems. The SMC is the smaller sibling of the two and is the one that has been most affected by the interactions of the two galaxies, this talk will be focused on the study of its structure and dynamical state. First, I will show the advanced stage of tidal disruption of the SMC using spectroscopic observations from the AAT paired with Gaia DR2 proper motions. Then I will present my work on producing a new dynamical mass model for the SMC, the implications of this model for the Dark Matter distribution of dwarf galaxies and the mechanisms that govern their evolution, and some suggestions for further studies. |
