Stellar formation is one of the most active fields of research in modern astrophysics. Stars form in dense and cold environments known as molecular clouds, where optical radiation cannot penetrate. Molecular transitions at radio and microwave wavelengths hence represent crucial diagnostic tools to probe these phases of the interstellar medium. I will show how through their analysis we can infer physical (such as density and temperature), kinematic, and chemical properties of star-forming regions. Within this broad topic, I will first focus on the properties of the prestellar core L1544, in particular concerning its ionisation state and its kinematics. Furthermore, I will show how molecular emission can help us disentangle the complex kinematics that characterise the early stages of high-mass star formation. |
