Lyman alpha emission as a tracer of galaxy environment – Lucia Guaita

Lyman alpha (Lya) photons at 1216 A rest frame are scattered by neutral Hydrogen (HI). Therefore, the shape of the Lya emission line from galaxies and the visibility of galaxies as Lya emitters (LAEs) depend on the HI amount and distribution. Some regions of the Universe are denser than the average in terms of number of galaxies and amount of HI gas. We expect that the gas in these regions could affect the stage of evolution of galaxies and shape their Lya emission.

I will present two projects in which the Lya intensity and distribution can inform about the properties of the environment. In the first one, we studied the dense region around a starburst galaxy at z=5.3. The extended Lya emission inform about the merger event occurring in the core of the structure. In the second project, we are studying overdensities at 2.5<z<4.5. By using a multi wavelength analysis and Lya information, we are investigating the stage of evolution of the galaxy members.
