A Universal Fundamental Plane for galaxies of all types with CALIFA and MaNGA – Erik Aquino

According to the virial theorem, all gravitational systems in equilibrium sit on a plane in the three-dimensional parameter space defined by their total mass, size, and second moment of the velocity tensor. While these quantities cannot be directly observed, there are suitable proxies: the luminosity, half-light radius, and velocity dispersion. For a limited range of galaxy types, these proxies indeed lie on a fundamental plane (FP). In the last decade, thanks to the Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) and to different tools for the kinematic and dynamic analysis of galaxies, these proxies have been improved and accurately estimated. This talk will be focused on the study of kinematics and dynamics of galaxies observed with IFS by CALIFA and MaNGA surveys. I will show a Universal (virial) Fundamental Plane for galaxies of all types with lower scatter than the classical FP and similar to the Tully-Fisher relation, we also study the dynamical nature of outlier galaxies to understand the implications of this small scatter. Finally, I will summarize my current research on new tests to the cosmological predictions on dark matter distribution in dwarf spheroidal galaxies by means of a discrete axisymmetric Schwarzschild code for dynamical analysis.
