The study of planet formation is being revolutionised by a flood of recent observations with ALMA and other telescopes of nearby protoplanetary discs. These observations have revealed many mysterious features, including gaps, spirals, rings and horseshoes. I will discuss our recent work to try to model and understand these phenomena in terms of the dynamics of dust, gas and newborn planets in discs, and what it might be telling us about the planet formation process.
